Before roads needed traffic lights, railways had used signals(信号)to control train traffic. In early days, these signals included a ball and something that looked like a kite. Ma Yan is not really a writer. But this 15-year-old girl has written a book-her diary. Many people around the world have been moved by her diary. Ma Yan's diary tells us about Ma's life. She lives in a poor village called Zhangjiashu in Tongxin,Ningxia. Ma is now a student of Grade Nine in Yuwang Junior High School in Tongxin. Before this, she had left school twice.
